As data centers in Kajaani was built and how it can be good

This story is for those interested in the practice of building data centers (on top, for details of the choice of specific equipment for the data center will not be disclosed), or thinking about renting a rack or dedicated server abroad, or wants to compare the conditions in which are data centers in Russia and abroad.

summary: beautiful scenery a short overviewstory buildingquestion Hebraistbonus for those who read to the end.

Among the Finnish vast lakes and pine forests, 30 km from Vuokatti ski resort, along the Kajaani river lake oulujärvi lies the business Park Renforsin Ranta. The theme of our discussion, the lakes and rivers are directly related: in the business Park in 2012, has built one of Europe's most modern data centers, and the surrounding lakes and rivers provide it with energy and cooling water.

Why the data center was built here? Here below the price of electricity (it is not necessary to transmit from a distance), there are four local stations and a few high-voltage lines connected to the Finnish national grid, no problem with cooling (the water temperature in the lake is from 1o to 23o), there is room for expansion, there are three optical link, one in Espoo and Oulu (and further on to Sweden), one in the Russian Kostomuksha (and further to Moscow).

Direct connection at the site have Kaisanet operators, TeliaSonera, Elisa, TDC, FNE, PPO and FUNET, and many Russian operators already have partnership agreements with one or more of them.

One of the anchor tenants of the data center was CSC — Computer Science Center, the state organization of the Ministry of education of Finland and the owning major power in the country. Their computers calculated the weather all over Finland, they are University scientists conduct their scientific calculations.

Among the partners of the centre — IBM is ready to offer its leased servers and ensure their stable operation.

Dry language characteristics of the DPC should say the following:

Square
the
    the
  • area-built data center is 24,000 square meters;
  • the
  • has leased 11,000 sq m, 7,000 sq m — CSC;
  • the
  • for order in an existing data center racks are now available 800 sq. m. (losing the colocation operator who rented part of those 11000 sq. m., which are mentioned above), and there is still free space under the roof — 13000 sq. m where you can build your data center;
  • the
  • of land on which to build their data centers in separate buildings: 50-200 Ha investment space with ready infrastructure.

(note: for me a little unusual that Finnish colleagues are placed essentially different datacenters owned by different companies, under one roof, but it's true. They have a common main cooling system, shared connections for electricity, common building, common security perimeter, etc.)

Power
120 MW are produced on site from renewable energy and 400 MW supplied by the Finnish national grid four independent high-voltage lines.

Renewable energy is the biofuel plant, and three hydroelectric plants, all of them have a direct connection to the site data center.

Cooling
Temperature of air and water in Kajaani allow to use passive cooling all year round.

Optics
Three separate link with exchange points Internet traffic in Finland, Sweden and Russia.

Distinctive features of the data center can be brought to the racks in the existing data centers significantly more power than usual (up to 28 kW). Rent the rack with the power right now.

How to build

The idea to build a datacenter in Kajaani came, apparently, at the same time specialists of CSC and government of Kajaani: one needed a new Playground, other — effective use of climatic and infrastructure advantages of the region.
In 2010, CSC decided that you need to choose a location for a new large data center. The decision prompted two developments: first, the CSC was required for expansion of computing power and reduce the cost of their service. Secondly, Google has built its new data center in Hamina. It became even clearer that Finland, with its cold, clear lakes and relatively inexpensive electricity — a Paradise not only for tourism and fisheries, but also for data centers that require cooling and power supply.

In the same year held a competition for the place of built: applicants from local governments competed as infrastructure, the required investment in construction and the rental price of land. Won the city of Kajaani.

In 2011, the planned infrastructure. First and foremost the data center decided to place in a former pulp and paper mill, which closed a few years ago (probably due to the decline in demand for paper).

In January 2012 construction began. The data center has turned out rather big: the building of the former plant high and the stands were full. Fit two floors (photo — construction phase).

In January-February 2012 made the project without going into detail.
All items worked from February to April.
From April to August has laid all the pipes, spent transaction.
In August and September made a raised floor, reached out and connected all the cables.br> In September installed racks.
September and October were tested in November, the DPC launched into commercial operation.

The Uptime Institute has chosen not to, as none of the potential customers they are not concerned. In the future, if need be, the data center will easily get Tier III by Uptime Institute, say the colleagues from DPC management of the company.

Specially for Habra

It just so happened that colleagues from a cluster of data centers in Kajaani decided to Habra you can provide a unique environment and suggested that option: they will listen to our community before approving rates for new customers.

Technically, the Finnish data center in Kajaani can offer any services to do a wide range of clients (from a site for the construction of the data center to a separate cheap VPS to rent), but it seems to me that the most interesting may be the rent of racks and dedicated servers (even with the service, even though without). Correct me if I'm wrong.

Of course, anchor tenants, Contracting for 10 years or more and confidante from tens of racks get special price. There is an assumption that on Habre there are people who are three hundred stands while there is no need, but one or two or three stands, or even one-two-three servers in Finland would be the case.

Latency and channel width to Kajaani promise to be better than Hetzner and LeaseWeb for a significant part of the Runet, so that the meaning in the placement of servers in a new data center there. More specifically, the points of traffic exchange in Helsinki — 4 MS, to Oulu — 3 MS, to MSK-IX — no more than 30 MS. Note for comparison that the ping from my server standing at Hetzner, to MSK-IX — 60 msec.

proposal for Habr: tell us, what would we like to obtain from the operator of the data center in Kajaani, and how much you want to pay. Colleagues from the data Center cluster in Kajaani try to provide. "Try" — because to eliminate the desire to rent a rack for $99/month. cannot be excluded, and to meet him would be impossible. That is, they will listen to all suggestions and ready to satisfy those that are in harmony with common sense.

Suggestions can be left in the comments to the post, write me in private messages as well (only in English) send an e-mail to Karl Vaydmen (Carl Wideman) at the address of the under "Contacts" on the website of the cluster DPCs (he's first in the list).

Bonus for the patient reader (or impatient naginatas keys End)

Colleagues from Kajaani will coming on Datacentre Summit 2013 in Moscow on March 18. The event is free, and if someone reading this wants to visit out of curiosity and with a desire to discuss specific plans and joint business Manager DPC in Kajaani (ordering racks, servers, sell their services in Russia, etc.), the company that manages the cluster DPCs are willing to pay for tickets for Datacentre Summit of the first five comers. The desire to Express personal messages to me and emails to Karl Vaydmen (Carl Wideman), see address above.

Important clarification about the bonus: tickets for the conference, but not in Moscow! Road to Moscow — at their own expense.

UPD: "raised floors" -> false floors. Thank you for the correction, and then when writing, I forgot how is called.
